During the Hispanic Heritage Month and for the third time, the Hispanic community will have the opportunity to acknowledge the work and volunteer service of some Hispanics/Latinos, who are positively influencing their community in Metro Detroit and throughout the state of Michigan.
The Latino Talent Awards is an initiative created by Colombian journalist and immigrant Liliana Ospina, the founder of Latinos En Michigan TV, an online bilingual platform focused on the Hispanic/Latino community in Michigan.
In October 2016, Liliana Ospina, a Colombian immigrant, graduate journalist and mom-entrepreneur, began producing videos stories about different topics and news that affected Michigan’s Hispanic community. The videos were shared on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn, and it gave rise to Latinos En Michigan TV.
Originally Talentos Latinos began as videos highlighting positive stories and the work of individuals whose commitment, work and volunteering, improved the lives of many Hispanics/Latinos in Michigan, especially in southwest Detroit.
The video stories were produced, filmed, and edited by Ospina for Latinos En Michigan TV, and on May 24 of 2019, Ospina launched The Latino Talent Awards, an event held at La Terraza restaurant in Detroit. The event was a success, and many members of the Hispanic community received an award and recognition for the work they do for the Hispanic/Latinos Community in Detroit and other parts of Michigan.
The Talentos Latinos Awards winners were people whose stories were broadcasted in Latinos En Michigan TV and were voted by the community using a Facebook poll. The Facebook poll had many categories ranging from Latino woman entrepreneur, Latino Artist, Latino Community leader to Latino Radio Personality.
In the following year, the extreme pressures of the COVID 19 crisis gave 2020’s event a special meaning that no matter what occurs, even a global pandemic can’t hold back our Hispanic community in Michigan. The Talentos Latinos Awards, gave awards to Hispanic entrepreneurs, influencers, essential workers, artists, musicians, community organizers, philanthropists, volunteers, and LGBTQ activists among others.
The event presented a show of Colombian Cumbia, virtual Argentine Tango, Mexican Folkloric Ballet and a Spanish rock band made up of Argentine musicians called Martín Chaparro Music – MC3 (MC and The Social Distance) that offered an original show full of Latin songs and a variety of entertainment. The event followed the CDC guidelines and had limited access to the community.
In 2021, on October 14 from 6:30PM to 9:30PM, The Latino Talent Awards will take place at The Lincoln Manor in Lincoln Park, a place with more capacity to follow CDC guidelines such as Facemask and Social Distancing.
The Talentos Latinos will present folkloric dances from Venezuela, a tango dance show from Argentina , an Amazon Jungle Dance from Peru, a Cumbia from Colombia, a flamenco dance from Spain and a folkloric dance from Mexico, and once again the Argentinian rock band from Martín Chaparro & VYBRA will delight the guests with their music.
The event will have limited access to the community and will follow CDC guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it will be an opportunity to acknowledge the work and volunteering of many Hispanics/Latino artists, entrepreneurs, business owners, singers, community leaders, and COVID-19 First Responders.
