Southwest Detroit — En un nuevo episodio de “Opina con Liliana Ospina”, tuvimos el placer de entrevistar a la inmigrante mexicana María Mason, mejor conocida como “María Apartamentos”, una emprendedora latina que llegó a corta edad a Michigan con su familia y, como muchos inmigrantes, enfrentó situaciones difíciles para convertirse en la persona que es hoy.
Antes de convertirse en una figura destacada en redes sociales y en la comunidad, María fue maestra, una vocación que abrazó con pasión. Sin embargo, la pandemia marcó un punto de inflexión en su vida. “Perdí el deseo de seguir como educadora y me dio mucho miedo cambiar de rumbo”, comenta. Fue entonces cuando le pidió a su esposo Larry la oportunidad de emprender junto a él, y así comenzó su nuevo proyecto de vida en el negocio de alquiler de apartamentos.
Según María, su primer día en la oficina fue revelador: sin experiencia previa, logró rentar su primer apartamento. Ahí descubrió que podía ayudar a otros a encontrar un hogar.
María encontró un nicho esencial: ayudar a inmigrantes sin historial crediticio ni documentos, brindándoles acceso a una vivienda digna. Su iniciativa ha sido clave para muchas familias latinas que, de otra manera, enfrentarían condiciones precarias o discriminación en el mercado de alquiler.
Ella misma vivió situaciones difíciles, como cuando residía en una casa en Southwest Detroit con condiciones deplorables, pero que aún así le ofrecía a su familia un lugar donde vivir. “Yo me acuerdo de un apartamento donde vivíamos, que había demasiadas cucarachas”, recuerda María.
En esa época, sus padres no sabían con quién hablar para pedir ayuda o buscar mejores opciones de vivienda. Vivir en esas condiciones significaba tener un techo y la posibilidad de salir adelante en este país.
Con mucho esfuerzo, ella y su familia comenzaron a abrirse camino en Southwest Detroit. Sin embargo, una tragedia marcó su vida: perdió a su padre cuando tenía solo 17 años, lo que la obligó a ver a su madre asumir sola la responsabilidad del hogar.
“Mi mamá es una mujer muy inspiradora, que nos sacó adelante cuando mi papá falleció. Se puso los dos gorros, de mamá y de papá, y fue una mujer muy fuerte”, afirma María.
Quizás esa tragedia fue lo que la impulsó a tener claro lo que quería para su futuro. “Yo siempre le decía a mi mamá que quería ser alguien importante. Yo sé que voy a ser algo importante”.
Más allá del negocio de apartamentos, María se ha convertido en una figura de influencia positiva. Su perfil en redes sociales no solo ofrece consejos sobre vivienda, sino también motivación y reflexiones sobre la vida como inmigrante, mujer emprendedora y figura pública. Con más de 10,000 seguidores, ha logrado conectar de manera auténtica con la comunidad latina.
María tiene planes ambiciosos: visualiza crear una organización sin fines de lucro para ofrecer becas a jóvenes latinos e impulsar el emprendimiento y la educación en su comunidad. Sueña con convertirse en conferencista motivacional y seguir transformando vidas desde su experiencia personal.
Con valentía, empatía y visión, María “Apartamentos” representa el verdadero espíritu de resiliencia y servicio comunitario que impulsa el cambio en nuestra comunidad.
Y el mejor consejo que María le da a la comunidad es aplicar lo que llama the let them theory:
“Déjalos que te juzguen, déjalos que hablen de ti, déjalos que tengan ideas de ti, pero deja que la gente te ame, deja que la gente te motive, deja que la gente te guíe. Let them.”

María “Apartments”: From Teacher to Entrepreneur

Southwest Detroit — In a new episode of “Opina con Liliana Ospina”, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mexican immigrant María Mason, better known as “María Apartments.” A Latina entrepreneur, María came to Michigan at a young age with her family and, like many immigrants, faced tough challenges to become the woman she is today.
Before becoming a prominent figure on social media and in her community, María was a teacher—a vocation she embraced with passion. However, the pandemic marked a turning point in her life. “I lost the desire to continue as an educator, and I was very afraid of changing paths,” she recalls. That’s when she asked her husband Larry for the opportunity to start a new journey with him in the apartment rental business.
According to María, her first day in the office was eye-opening: with no prior experience, she managed to rent out her first apartment. That’s when she realized she could help others find a place to call home.
María discovered a crucial niche: helping immigrants without credit history or legal documents access dignified housing. Her initiative has been a lifeline for many Latino families who would otherwise face poor conditions or discrimination in the rental market.
She herself experienced hardship, living in a Southwest Detroit home with deplorable conditions—but it was still a roof over her family’s head. “I remember an apartment we lived in, there were so many cockroaches,” María recalls.
Back then, her parents didn’t know who to turn to for help or better housing options. For her family, those conditions were the price of having shelter and a chance to get ahead in this country.
Through hard work, María and her family began to carve out a space for themselves in Southwest Detroit. But tragedy struck when she lost her father at the age of 17, forcing her to watch her mother take on the responsibility of the household alone.
“My mom is an inspiring woman who carried us through when my dad died. She took on both roles—mom and dad—and she was incredibly strong,” María says.
That tragedy may have been what drove her to set a clear vision for her future. “I always told my mom I wanted to be someone important. I know I’m going to be someone important.”
Beyond the apartment business, María has become a positive influencer. Her social media presence doesn’t just share housing tips—it also offers motivation and reflections on life as an immigrant, an entrepreneurial woman, and a public figure. With over 10,000 followers, she’s created a genuine connection with the Latino community.
María has big plans: she envisions launching a nonprofit organization to offer scholarships to Latino youth and promote entrepreneurship and education in her community. She dreams of becoming a motivational speaker and continuing to change lives through her personal story.
With courage, empathy, and vision, María “Apartments” embodies the true spirit of resilience and community service that drives change in our neighborhoods.
And her best advice to the community is to embrace what she calls “The Let Them Theory”:
“Let them judge you, let them talk about you, let them have their opinions about you—but also let people love you, let people uplift you, let people guide you. Let them.”
