Detroit, MI – En una ceremonia privada en las instalaciones del Detroit Public Safety Headquarters, la Asociación de Oficiales de Policía Hispanos de Michigan – capítulo Detroit – dio oficialmente la bienvenida al jefe de policía de Detroit, Todd Bettison, como nuevo miembro de la organización.
El evento marcó un hito importante para la asociación, reafirmando su misión de décadas de fortalecer los lazos entre las fuerzas del orden y la comunidad hispana.
David Vásquez, presidente de la asociación y oficial activo del Departamento de Policía de Detroit, expresó su profunda gratitud por el apoyo del jefe Bettison. “Hoy fue un día grandioso para nosotros,” dijo Vásquez. “El jefe de policía se unió oficialmente a nuestra organización como miembro. Eso es enorme. Su apoyo ayuda a amplificar nuestro mensaje y a profundizar nuestra conexión con la comunidad.”
Todd Bettison, jefe de Policía de Detroit, cuenta con más de 27 años de experiencia en el Departamento de Policía de Detroit, donde ascendió desde oficial de patrulla hasta Primer Subjefe de Policía, el segundo rango más alto del departamento, antes de desempeñarse como Vicealcalde a partir de 2021 y en 2022 alcalde Duggan decidió nombrarlo Vicealcalde en 2022.
Reconocido por su rápido ascenso, Bettison goza de amplio respeto por su liderazgo, su capacidad para ganarse la confianza de la comunidad y su habilidad para colaborar entre agencias. Como Vicealcalde, estuvo a cargo de importantes departamentos de la ciudad, incluidos el Departamento de Bomberos, Manejo de Emergencias, Derechos Civiles, Salud y Transporte.
Según Vásquez, contar con el respaldo del principal líder policial de la ciudad va más allá de lo simbólico: es una estrategia clave. La sólida relación del jefe con la comunidad en general de Detroit ayudará a la organización a ampliar su alcance, especialmente en zonas desatendidas.
La Asociación de Oficiales de Policía Hispanos de Michigan – capítulo Detroit – fue fundada hace varias décadas y, desde sus inicios, ha estado comprometida con iniciativas centradas en la comunidad. Su misión incluye apoyar a los oficiales dentro y fuera del departamento, guiar a jóvenes a través de programas de mentoría y organizar eventos que fomenten la confianza y el compromiso entre la policía y los residentes.
Una de las tradiciones más significativas de la asociación es su entrega anual de becas, diseñadas para ayudar a estudiantes locales a alcanzar sus metas académicas. Este año, entre dos y tres estudiantes de escuelas de Detroit —particularmente del área de Southwest Detroit— recibirán cada uno una beca de $2,000 dólares para apoyar su camino hacia la educación superior.
La Ceremonia de Becas 2025 se realizará el 13 de agosto en el Giovanni Lounge, ubicado en Vernor Highway. El evento contará con música en vivo, comida, actividades de conexión comunitaria y rifas, ofreciendo a los residentes una oportunidad de celebrar juntos en un ambiente familiar.
La intención de este tipo de iniciativas es retribuirle algo a la próxima generación. La Asociación de Oficiales de Policía Hispanos invita a toda la comunidad de Detroit a unirse a esta celebración y apoyar esta causa. Su labor sigue cerrando brechas, elevando a la juventud y construyendo un Detroit más seguro, fuerte y unido.
Detroit Police Chief joins Hispanic Police Officers Association, reinforcing his commitment to the community

Detroit, MI – In a private ceremony held at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters, the Hispanic Police Officers Association of Michigan – Detroit chapter – officially welcomed Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison as a new member of the organization.
The event marked a significant milestone for the association, reaffirming its decades-long mission of strengthening the ties between law enforcement and the Hispanic community.
David Vásquez, president of the association and an active officer with the Detroit Police Department, expressed deep gratitude for Chief Bettison’s support.
“Today was a great day for us,” said Vásquez. “The Chief of Police officially joined our organization as a member. That’s huge. His support helps amplify our message and deepen our connection with the community.”
Todd Bettison, Detroit Police Chief, brings over 27 years of experience with the Detroit Police Department, where he rose from patrol officer to First Assistant Chief, the second-highest rank in the department, before serving as Deputy Mayor beginning in 2021. In 2022, Mayor Duggan officially appointed him to that position.
Recognized for his rapid rise through the ranks, Bettison is widely respected for his leadership, his ability to earn the community’s trust, and his skill in fostering collaboration across agencies. As Deputy Mayor, he oversaw major city departments, including the Fire Department, Emergency Management, Civil Rights, Health, and Transportation.
According to Vásquez, having the support of the city’s top law enforcement official goes beyond symbolism—it’s a strategic move. The Chief’s strong relationship with Detroit’s broader community will help the organization expand its outreach, especially in underserved areas.
The Hispanic Police Officers Association of Michigan – Detroit chapter was founded several decades ago and has been committed from the beginning to community-centered initiatives. Its mission includes supporting officers both within and outside the department, mentoring youth, and organizing events that build trust and engagement between law enforcement and residents.
One of the association’s most meaningful traditions is its annual scholarship program, designed to help local students reach their academic goals. This year, two to three students from Detroit schools—particularly from the Southwest Detroit area—will each receive a $2,000 scholarship to support their higher education journey.
The 2025 Scholarship Ceremony will take place on August 13 at Giovanni Lounge, located on Vernor Highway. The event will feature live music, food, community networking activities, and raffles, offering residents a chance to celebrate together in a family-friendly environment.
The purpose of initiatives like this is to give back to the next generation. The Hispanic Police Officers Association invites the entire Detroit community to join the celebration and support the cause. Their work continues to bridge gaps, uplift youth, and build a safer, stronger, and more united Detroit.
