The Mother-Daughter Relationship that Drove Alma Cooper to Success

Alma Cooper, a 22-year-old from Okemos, Michigan, has left an indelible mark on the history of beauty pageants by being crowned Miss USA 2024. Her victory is not only due to her beauty and elegance but also to her personal story and remarkable achievements.

Following an emotional interview on Latinos en Michigan TV, the first Latino media outlet to have the privilege of speaking with Oralia Cooper, Alma’s mother, we were able to delve into the profound relationship between mother and daughter. This special connection is not only touching but also crucial to understanding how Alma managed to become Miss USA 2024.

Alma is the daughter of Oralia Cooper, a Hispanic woman who started as a farm worker and later had a long career as a teacher. This connection to her roots and her mother’s struggles inspired Alma to pursue her dreams with determination. Additionally, Alma is a United States Army officer and a graduate of West Point, the prestigious military academy for officers. Her rigorous training and dedication led her to earn a master’s degree in data science from Stanford University, where she is currently on scholarship.

The Road to the Crown
Alma also shared her desire to be a queen from a young age. Although she temporarily distanced herself from this dream due to her studies and responsibilities, she eventually returned to her essence and achieved her dream of becoming Miss USA. Her mother, who was also a queen in her community, taught her that circumstances do not define destiny.

«As the daughter of a migrant worker, a proud Afro-Latina woman, and a United States Army officer, I am living the American dream,» Cooper told the judges during a question-and-answer session at Sunday’s final. «If there is one thing that my life and my mother have taught me, it is that circumstances never define your destiny: you can make success accessible through the pursuit of excellence.»

Alma Cooper is an example of perseverance, dedication, and bravery. Her story inspires everyone to follow their dreams despite the difficulties. Congratulations, Alma, on your well-deserved title of Miss USA 2024!
